I’m currently working in my fourth week of my new job, and I absolutely love it! I’m currently doing a 12 month ‘Trainee Gap Year’ at a coal mine near where I live, which is simply 12 months working in each department of the coal mine, meeting new people, and learning new things.
I’ve already learnt so much it’s not funny. To do with the job, and to do with life. I’m working alongside some amazing and inspirational people, hoping I might find a career I want to walk into. My understanding so far with open-cut coal mining, is that it’s a whole new world, and there is so much opportunity! However, it’s not just the coal mining I’ve learnt about.
- Motivation: I’ve learnt that if you want to be successful, you’re going to have to buckle down and stay motivated. Get a good name, work hard, and enjoy what you do. Meet new people. Become a friendly and open work partner, and ask plenty of questions. By doing this, your workplace instantly becomes a happier place, and you become a happier person. Just like so many things in life, your attitude determines how things will work out.
- Dream: I’ve learnt to look ahead, and not to get so caught up in the moment. Dream one hell of a lot about what you want to do with your future, or what you may want to do with your future, and work for it. I’ve learnt that there is so much worth, and efforts in each and every person I’ve worked with, simply because of the way they look ahead in their careers, and work towards who/what they want to be.
- Be your best you: Each and every day that I walk into work, I remind myself to stay me. I’m here to learn, and apart of learning is to go through things that aren’t necessary for me, or what I enjoy. However, like everything in life, you’ve got to try and give it your best before you truly know if it’s for you or not. While meeting new people, I want to introduce myself as Mikayla, and not anybody else. I want to be an honest and open person to work alongside, no matter what job I walk into.
I look forward to the next 11 months of my traineeship, meeting new people and learning new things. I’m so determined to make this year a good one. I want to take each and every moment as a lesson or a memory.
